Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi was a German mathematician born in Potsdam in 1804. He became one of the leading figures in 19th-century mathematics and is best known for his work on elliptic functions, a field he helped establish alongside Niels Henrik Abel. Jacobi also made important contributions to number theory, determinants, differential equations and mechanics. His name is attached to several concepts still used in mathematics and physics, including the Jacobian, the Jacobi symbol and the Hamilton-Jacobi theory. He taught at the University of Königsberg, where he helped build a strong mathematical school. Jacobi died in Berlin in 1851, aged 46.
